The AC Line Conditioner Explained

Power conditioning as done by AC Line Conditioners is a misnomer since it is voltage and not power being addressed.  Line conditioning deals to a great extent with adjustment and control of voltage.  They may included additional capabilities that will help assure clean delivery of voltage.  The actual capabilities vary from one model to another where some will stress certain aspects while they may completely ignore others.  Some commonly used versions of AC Line Conditioners are used in audio power conditioners and include no capability to regulate voltage.  There is virtually no limit in size.  They may be found small enough to mount on a printed circuit board or large enough to service an entire factory.

The AC Line Conditioner VS. the DC Line Conditioner

The term AC Line Conditioner may seem redundant to many who are only familiar with line conditioners used in connection with the normal power infrastructure.  In this context the term AC Line Conditioner can be considered synonymous with power conditioner, line power conditioner and power line conditioner.  In most instances they can also be referred to as surge line conditioners or voltage line conditioners.  However, there are also DC line conditioners which perform similar tasks but with DC current.  For this reason it may behoove one in certain circumstances to be sure to specify that he is speaking of an AC, and not a DC line conditioner.

What Other Devices Mimic the AC Line Conditioner?

Functions of the AC Line Conditioner sometimes parallel some of those of the control power transformer, but they actually are different devices.  The latter is a true transformer.  Another device that performs a similar voltage leveling task is the constant voltage transformer.  It does voltage leveling and also is great for surge suppression.  But it, too, is a true transformer and provides its function under completely different means.  There is also the constant voltage regulator.  This device will contain mainly the common aspect of voltage regulation or voltage leveling as found in many AC Line Conditioners.  Of the three, its electronics are most similar to that of the AC Line Conditioner.
