What does a Line Power Conditioner do?

Line Power Conditioners are applied for the sake of enhancing and/or normalizing the power characteristics in an installation.  Line Power Conditioners are often necessary to help protect electronics against unwanted and frequently damaging power anomalies.  A Line Power Conditioner can also be referred to as a line conditioner, power conditioner or power line conditioner.  They may act as noise filters, perform voltage regulation (and referred to as a voltage line conditioner), provide isolation and perform surge suppression.  In some cases they are combined with a battery backup that will also allow temporary or continued use in the event of a power outage.

Line Power Conditioners and Noise

Using a Line Power Conditioner to handle noise can be critical.  Noise originates from a number of sources such as:

  • Damaged or poor wiring

  • Affects from other equipment on the same installation

  • Natural fluctuations in power supply

  • Interaction of wiring paralleling other wiring

  • Atmospheric disturbances and lightning

  • Failures or damage to powerlines and transformers

  • Local disturbances which might include operation of fluorescent lighting, radio equipment, motors and generators with electrical fields, etc.

Placement of a Line Power Conditioner just before the equipment it is intended to service can avoid such affects.  The value in this is readily apparent when you see how much noise affects a variety of electronics.  Noise in a TV is exhibited as "snow", while in audio equipment it is interpreted as real noise, or static.  In information technologies it may manifest as interruptions in service or slower transfer speeds.  Integrity of signal is critical in such situations.  Similarly, medical equipment may be affected in ways that defeats the accuracy intended. 

How to tell a good Line Power Conditioner

Typically, one would look immediately for the noise suppression rating if a Line Power Conditioner.  This is given in terms of decibels (db).  This measurement is closely associated with loudness and is referred to as sound pressure level (SPL).  A higher rating indicates better noise suppression.  Minimally, the rating should be 40-60db; higher if possible, depending on your needs. 

Surge suppression in a Line Power Conditioner is measured in a unit called a joule.  This measurement establishes how much of a momentary electrical surge can be absorbed in terms of the power or heat necessary to maintain a watt per second.  Higher ratings indicate the capacity to absorb a longer or higher surge without damage to itself.   But one should also check the maximum watt capacity since different equipment demands different capacities.  Do not overlook adding up the total wattage needed when using a bank of equipment with the same Line Power Conditioner.

Many of the better models also offer a guaranty against failure and subsequent damage to affected equipment resulting from an electrical surge.  Line Power Conditioners are inexpensive when compared to the electronics they protect, so it is well worth the investment to choose a good one with a high joule rating and a warranty.

In the case of those which offer backup power, one would check the rated time expected.  Some last for only enough time to use normal shut down routines while others may allow extended work time.  Replacement battery availability, quality and cost can be other factors to consider.
